27th Nov 2009 Junior Tennis Awards Night
The Junior Committee completed their competitive year with their awards night in the Clubhouse on Friday night. A good turnout in keeping with the attendances throughout the year saw the final of the mixed and two of the singles competition being completed. The A girls Singles between Stephanie Leonard and Catherine Fogarty was not played but is scheduled for the coming weekend. Club Player of the year award went to Niamh Bergin who represented the club and performed so well in the Interprovincial series and the Community games. Aswad Rameili won the club supporter of the year award and Donnacha Quinn and Alison Harvey won the most improved player awards. A delighted Catriona Luttrell and Emma Thompson jointly shared the Club person of the Year for their efforts in organizing junior club activities. The work of Club Junior Committee Chairperson Pat Fogarty, Club Chairperson Emily McDonald, Malcolm and Garry from Junior Committee were acknowledged for their efforts during a busy season. The award winners included the following: A Boys singles: Bill Talbot beat Kevin Wilson. Girls B: Clodagh Bergin beat Alison Harvey. Doubles: Katie Rogers/Rebecca Molloy beat Emily Rogers/Clodagh Bergin, Joe Casey/Katie Rogers beat Emma Holohan/Mathew Thompson., Catherine Fogarty/Ciara Egan beat Izzy Rameili/Gillian O Connell, Izzy Rameili /Thomas Bulfin beat Mathew Thompson and Harry Talbot. Weather permitting Friday nights will continue for the next two weeks and finish for the year on Friday 18th Dec with a Fun Race Night or Casino night for charity. Due to the inclement weather conditions we have been unable to run the Annual Castle Durrow Shield competition, but it is planned to run off this event over the Christmas period.

2nd Oct 2009 - Record turnout at de Vesci Salver competition
On a beautiful autumnal evening on a late September evening in the fantastic setting that is Abbeyleix Tennis club the 8th annual de Vesci salver tennis competition winners for 2009 were decided. A record of sixty competitors participated with the in all 47 matches played. It was fitting that the final went down to the last possible play with both pairing having won three and tied at deuce in the seventh game. Malcolm McDonald having won the competition last year was paired with Claire Thompson and again came up thrumps in winning the vital last point. Gallant beaten finalists were Garry Luttrell & Clodagh Bergin, with Kevin Bergin/Ciara Egan and Sinead Stone/Eoin Keenan beaten semi-finalists. The de Vesci salver was presented to the club in 2002 by Lord Tom de Vesci as a perpetual trophy for an adult Junior competition to be held each year. From there it has grown to be one of the major Club competitions in the clubs calendar. The evening was rounded with a barbeque and presentation of prizes to winners and runners up by Club Chairperson Emily McDonald. The major feat in running of so many matches in one evening was entirely down to the four court referees, Siobhan Fennelly, Malcolm McDonald, Leisa Fitzgerald & Davis Brophy, who kept the play moving so well. There was Special mention for the Abbeyleix team members who participated, having won Midland league honours on the previous evening. Lord de Vesci was unable to attend on the evening but passed on his best wishes to all the participants and his delight in seeing the competition develop into such a spectacle over the years.

5th September - Juvenile Tennis Finals & Awards evening 2009
The juvenile tennis season was completed last Saturday with the finals of the Saturday morning league and the presentation of all the awards for the various club competitions. Despite the disappointing summer weather all 17 Saturdays since commencement in May saw our youngest club players compete with each other and learn the game. Schools program started in May, followed by Tennis Camps, Coaching, Community Games, Leinster provincial leagues, Centenary Olympics, Junior/Juvenile Competition, Tuesday & Thursday afternoon tennis and Club Competitions culminating in party evening and presentations last Saturday. Full list of prize winners will be displayed in Clubhouse and on club website. Special thanks to Emily, First & Second session co-ordinators Sinead Stone & Marie Thompson, as well as to Third level students Cathy Maloney & Siobhan Fennelly. Thanks also to Leisa, Tracy, Alain, Michelle, Denise, Anne, Gillian, Emma, Cormac, Michelle & Margaret and also many others who helped out in 2009. It was great to see so many of the third session group help out with the younger ones, particularly Rachel, Jennifer, Alison, Nicole & Ella. Also thanks to our official photographer Liam Fitzgerald for his work and special mention also to Club Coach Bryan Stewart. All children received certificates, prizes or special Abbeyleix Tennis Club Centenary pens. The perpetual trophy for Club Singles Champions went to Rachel Cass & Kevin Wilson. To mark the occasion of the u-13 team reaching the Community Games Leinster Final in July, the club presented special plaques to the team. The overall attendances were on a par with 2008 with many new members particularly from Durrow & Ballyroan. Thanks to Laois Sports partnership for grant received in 2009 used to reward second & Third level students in form of vouchers.

29th August 2009 - Tuesday/Thursday Afternoon Tennis
Tuesday & Thursday afternoon tennis for Primary school students finished was week having completed the programme for each Tuesday and Thursday throughout July and August. There was a good attendance with an average of 20 participants each session and the aim of improving standards was achieved. Special thanks to Siobhan Fennelly and Cathy Maloney for running the sessions. Both girls had assisted club Coach Bryan Stewart with the Club Summer Camp run in the first two weeks of July and had very obviously gained valuable experience from Bryan, which was very much in evidence throughout this programme. Awards will be presented to the overall winners at the awards evening in September. Thanks to Laois Sports partnership for their assistance with this programme and for the grant received in 2009 which was used to promote the event and to reward both Cathy and Siobhan in the form of vouchers.

2nd August 2009 Friday evening Junior Competition:
Winners were Emma Thompson/ Izzy Rameili and R/up Catriona Luttrell/Mathew Wallace. The Saturday morning Mini Olympics included Athletics, Penalties, Basketball, Rounder’s, Tennis, relay event and the popular bean bag throw. Special thank to Andy Sutton from LSP and all of the team leaders Siobhan, Marie, Alain, Liam, Emma, Sinead, Tracy, Leisa and  Cathy. Team Belgium was the overall winners and all participants were presented with a specially marked Centenary ball.
The Saturday evening Junior/Juvenile competition had a confined entry of 32 with Aileen Lutrrell/Kevin Wilson winning out against Siobhan Fennelly & Eamonn Oxley. Bank Holiday competition winners: First: Raymond Self/Trish Picard, Second Kathleen Burnell/ Catriona Luttrell, Third Gemma Ogilvy/Richard Conroy, Fourth Liam Fitzgerald/Aoife Luttrell.

11th July 2009 Community Games Leinster Final
Two Abbeyleix teams competed in the Community Games Leinster championships in Carlow on Saturday 11th July. Both the u-13 and u-16 team reached the finals but lost out to Gorey and Naas. U-13 squad included Kevin Wilson, Bryan Thompson, Donagh Egan, Putera Rameili, Aine Bergin, Rachel and Jennifer Cass and Alison Harvey. The u-16 squad consisted of Katie Rogers, Ciara Egan, Clodagh and Niamh Bergin, Catherine Fogarty, Bill Talbot, Mathew Wallace, Hayden Lalor, Mathew Thompson and Izzy Rameili.

4th July 2009 Leinster Interprovincial Tennis
Two u -16 teams represented the club in the knock out stages of the Leinster provincial Towns league and despite missing some of their stronger players played well without overall success. Team panel: Bill Talbot, Mathew Thompson, Hayden Lalor, Izzy Rameili, Stephanie Leonard, Niamh & Clodagh Bergin and Emma Holohan. Teams also represented the club at u-10, u-12, and u-14 level for boys and girls in one day sessions in Naas, Carlow, and Mullingar.

29th June 2009 Schools tennis program
The club completed a very successful schools programme with local primary Schools during May and June. Students form Scoil Mhuire, South School, Durrow, Ballinakill Spink and Ballyroan participated. Thanks to the principals and teachers in all schools for attending and organizing transport. Thanks also to the hockey club who ran a similar programme in conjunction with the tennis club one. Thanks to all the second  and third level students Siobhan Fennelly, Cathy Maloney, Catriona Luttrell, Emma Thompson, Cormac McGowan, Gillian O Connell  and Claire Thompson who ran the sessions with Emily, Pat, Malcolm. Thanks to Laois Sports partnership for grant received in 2009 used to reward second & Third level students in form of vouchers.

Summer Tennis commencing on Saturday 9th May at Abbeyleix Tennis Club
The summer is here and Abbeyleix Tennis club are again up and running with Juvenile Tennis programme for all budding tennis players. What promises to be another successful year will commence next Saturday 9th May and will run every Saturday until September.  There will have three sessions each Saturday morning as follows:1st & 2nd Classes @ 10.00 to 11.00, 3rd & 4th classes @ 10.30 to 11.30 and 5th & 6th classes @ 11.30 to 1.00pm The first session will concentrate on developing skills, co-ordination and agility, the second session will concentrate on rallying, serving, forehand & backhand strokes and work towards incorporating these, into a game situation, while the final session will be mainly around games on a league format, with emphasis on court positions and rallying. Later in the summer we will be running afternoon weekday sessions involving games run off on a league basis. Club competitions, Assessment days, Family days and team events will be organized throughout summer. Parents are encouraged to get involved and help out with organizing activities alongside the Clubs Juvenile Committee. Professional coaching and summer camps will also be on offer for those interested in developing their game. The club has two trained Children’s officers and have a Code of ethics in place. Juvenile membership is maintained at 2008 levels at €40 per person with family rates also available. Membership covers all Saturday sessions and also allows access to club facilities up to 6.00 pm on weekdays and also at weekend with adult supervision. Registration is on a first come first served basis as numbers will be limited this year. 

15th March 2009 -Juveniles – Saturday Morning Tennis
Saturday morning tennis will commence on Saturday 9th May and run until September, with a similar format to 2008.All our Juvenile committee and our teenage assistants will again undergo training and leadership course before commencement of programme. The code of ethics relating to children in Sport is as always high on our agenda, and we have added to our list of recruits, with additional people attending the Awareness course with Laois Sports Partnership. Marie Thompson and Garry Luttrell will act as Children’s Officers in 2009. We are again asking more parents to get involved with Saturday mornings, and if interested please contact us and we will include you in our Training sessions, scheduled for April/May. Professional coaching will be available with Bryan Stewart and two summer camps will gain be on offer in July/Aug. Tuesday & Thursday afternoon tennis will be available again in July & August 2009, and our club competitions will be run off during these sessions. We also plan Juvenile matches and one day events against local clubs. While we had the Olympics day in 2008, this year our special focus will be on our Centenary Year, with special activities centred around the August bank Holiday weekend.

De Vesci Salver Competition & Club BBQ Friday 3rd Oct 2008. The annual De Vesci salver tennis competition was played on Friday 3rd October. A record entry of 56 players participated. Winners of the salver were Tess Stokes & Malcolm McDonald. Runners up were Catherine Fogarty & Michelle Stone, with Tony McInerney & Katie Rogers and Leisa Fitzgerald & Frances Leonard beaten semi finalists.

Castle Durrow Perpetual Trophy. A great evening’s tennis was had with almost 30 players competing for the Castle Durrow shield on Sept 19th. This new perpetual shield was presented to the club by peter & Shelley Stokes and will be played for on an annual basis by the clubs junior members in a doubles competition. Winners of the inaugural event were Emma Thompson & Catherine Fogarty; Runners up were Stephanie Leonard & Mathew Thompson. Beaten semi finalists were Catriona Luttrell & Harry Talbot & Ciara Egan & Emma Howe. Sports vouchers were presented to winners & runners up. MVP award went to Emma Howe & Izzy Rameili. Refreshments were served in the clubhouse afterwards.

07/09/2008 Laois Junior Tennis Open Competitions u-12 Another successful morning’s tennis for the junior players of Laois on Sunday 7th Sept with players from Abbeyleix, Portarlington, and Rathangan taking part in the u12 Doubles. Over 20 players competed with the Kevin Wilson of Abbeyleix & Rathangan Luke Dempsey winning the Boys double, Jennifer Cass & Aine Bergin beating Clodagh Bergin & Alison Harvey in the girls doubles and Rachel Cass runners-up with Jake Kelly in mixed doubles. 30/08/2008 Abbeyleix Juvenile Tennis Finals & Awards evening The curtain came down last Saturday on the summer season of tennis in Abbeyleix with the finals of the Saturday morning league and the presentation of all the awards for the various club competitions. One of Club Chairperson Emily McDonald hopes for her year in office was to see more children playing tennis and it certainly came true this summer starting with the schools programme, increased numbers on Saturday across all sessions, the tennis Olympic day, Coaching and Summer camps all contributing to the success. The juvenile committee was anxious this year to get more parents involved on the sessions and this allied to the significant help from the clubs teenagers also achieved this aim. With over 35 helpers the 16 Saturday morning since May, it allowed more time on court and extra attention to skill development. Marie Thompson, Alain Dellanbach as well as teenagers Siobhan, Emma, Claire, Catriona, Catherine, Emma H, Ciara, Aileen, Gillian & Sabrina all came in for special thanks and a list of all who assisted is recognized in scroll form in clubhouse. 31/08/2008 Laois Junior Tennis Open Competitions u-14 A great morning of tennis for the u-14 players from Portarlington, Abbeyleix, Carlow and Tullamore took place last Sunday morning in glorious sunshine. Over 20 players competed with the Portarlington pair of Patrick Dempsey & Claire Faherty getting the better of local pair Stephanie Leonard & Andrew Bonham in a gripping mixed final. Ciara Egan & Emma Holohan and Izzy Rameili & Luke Arttride won the doubles events. Also competing were Hayden Lalor, Bill Talbot, Gillian O Connell, Claire Thompson & Catherine Fogarty.

31/08/2008 Laois Junior Tennis Open Competitions u-10 The u-10’ travelled to Portarlington and acquitted themselves well without overall success despite good performances from Jennifer Cass, Aine Bergin, Louise Cantwell, Michelle Stone, Stephen Thompson, Jack O Hara, & Donagh Egan.

24/08/2008 Laois Junior Tennis Open Competition u-16 Well done to the U-16 players who competed on the U-16 Open competition and especially Emma Thompson & Frances Leonard who both reached the final with Frances & her partner winning. Also competing were Niamh Bergin, Catriona Luttrell, Mathew Wallace and Mathew Thompson.

17/08/2008 Carlow & Donnybrook Open One of our strongest young players Kevin Wilson competed this month in both the Carlow & Donnybrook Open and reached the semi final in Carlow. Well done to Kevin.

9/08/2008 Mini Olympics at Tennis Club Well done to all the super athletes who participated at our Mini Olympics last Saturday morning. The rain fell heavily before and after the events but the sun shone during them. A special thanks is extended to all those who assisted and particularly to our team leaders Gillian, Claire, Emma T, Mathew, Emma H, Siobhan & Ciara and to all who manned the various Stations. Also thanks to Laois Sports partnership and Andy Sutton for the much appreciated assistance. The disciplines included Volleyball, Hockey, Basketball, Tennis, and Soccer, table tennis, Air hockey, Olympic Quiz & a host of Athletic events. 26/06/2008 Tennis Schools Programme. We have now completed our programme for local schools. This has been a very successful undertaking with over 300 children visiting the club grounds and participating in the programme. Club Coach has also visited the Schools for first & second class students and displayed tennis skills. Big Thanks to the schools & teachers from Scoil Mhuire, South School, Ballinakill, Durrow, Shanahoe, Spink & Mountrath. Thanks also to the sponsors of this initiative, Laois Sports Partnership; Sports section Laois County Council, Abbeyleix Credit Union & John Bonham MCC.
