Dickie McDonald Perpetual Cup Results

On Sunday 19th July Abbeyleix Tennis Club hosted the first Dickie McDonald Perpetual Cup. The competition was organised by the McDonald family and friends to raise money for St. Marys in Delvin in Co. Westmeath which their son Dickie is a part of. There was an unprecedented entry into the competition of 72 people from members of the club in Abbeyleix and other clubs; Athy, Rathangan, Drogheda and Tullamore. The competition kicked off at 2pm and went on into the evening. Following on from the action on the courts there was a buffet in the Club House which was enjoyed by all. At the end of the day all present sat back and enjoyed some fantastic tennis in the finals. See details of winners below. In her speech Club Chairperson Emily McDonald thanked all for their support; those that took part, made a donation, prepared and helped out with the food and organised games on the day; she noted the organisers were thrilled with the large entry and fantastic tennis on the day and look forward to a repeat of the same next year. In total €2,315 was raised for St. Marys in Delvin Co. Westmeath.

Bryan Stewart Summer Tennis Camp 2009

A hugely enjoyable and successful week’s coaching and tennis was had by all participants at this year’s summer tennis camp in Abbeyleix Tennis Club.

The camp catered for children between the ages of 5-13 years, with coaching sessions lasting three hours each day. The morning session was for 5-8 year olds comprising tennis skills, co-ordination activities and fun games.  The afternoon session catered for 9-13 year olds with lots of tennis played by all in many different forms.

Run by the Club Coach, Bryan Stewart, each group worked on the skills and techniques of the game. The camp had a different theme each day with daily awards and prizes for participants. Each participant was also awarded an individual certificate at the end of the camp.

The club will continue to run activities throughout the summer including Saturday morning tennis and it’s centenary year celebrations over the August bank holiday weekend. The next term of coaching will take place in September under the guidance of Club Coach Bryan Stewart. Details will appear on www.abbeyleixtennis.com during August.

See pictures attached in our photo album of some of our rising stars who attended the camp.
