Abbeyleix Lawn Tennis Club opened up for its open week on October 21- November 04. The open week was revived last year and following its success last year has been reinstated in the competition’s calendar of the club. With high entry levels the competitions were run over two weeks. There was a fantastic display of tennis throughout the competitions with people travelling from neighbouring clubs of Athy, Carlow Kilkenny and Rathangan as well as local players.

The competitions began on Monday 21st October with the men’s and ladies doubles. These competitions finished up with excellent finals on Sunday 27th October. Competitions in the mixed doubles then hit off on Monday 28th October again the standard was equally as high as the first week and the finals on Sunday 04th October were enjoyed by not just the players but those that had came along to support also.

Thanks also to those who helped out with catering during the week and also on days of final competitions. Well done to all who took part especially prize winners.

A new children's tennis programme will start next Sunday, October
18th. Catering for children from Junior Infants up to 6th Class. Each
Sunday will cost €4 on a pay as you go basis. Sessions will include
qualified coaching with an emphasis on learning the skills to play the
game. The game will be adapted to each age with different stages of
development with micro, mini, midi and max stages. The emphasis at
each stage is to make the game easier and more enjoyable to play.
Coaching, skills development and tennis play will form a part of each

Well done to the Abbeyleix team of Tracy Burke, Leisa Fitzgerald, Kevin Bergin and Simon White on winning the final of the Midland league Division 3, against Nenagh on Thursday 24/09/2009. Two great wins over Athlone & Killaloe in the Q-final and S-Final, another success for our club and this team. See photo of team in our photos page.

Entries for the open week are now being taken. Format is ladies doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles with A, B and C sections. Ladies and men’s doubles will commence on Monday 21 September 2009, the final will be on Sunday 27 September 2009. Mixed Doubles will commence on Monday 28 September 2009, the final will be on Sunday 04 October 2009. Entrants can pick their own partner. Entry fee per person is €15 for one competition and €20 for two competitions this includes lights and balls. Entry sheets are available in the Club house or see attachment below.
