Dickie McDonald Cup 2011

Wimbledon may be over but tennis is still going strong in Abbeyleix tennis club. Sunday 17th July saw the club host the annual Dickie McDonald charity fundraiser. The one day tennis event is organised by the McDonald family for their son and brother Dickie McDonald. This year the funds raised were donated to Laois Disabled Riders and St Marys Delvin Respite Care.

 

Over fifty people played on the day in three sections; A, B and C representing Abbeyleix, Portarlington, Rathangan, Athy, Tullamore, Naas and Castleknock tennis clubs. Abbeyleix club was represented in the finals in each section and the overall cup for the day was won by Laurence Doyle and Ellen Cassells for the second year running the cup was presented to them by Alan O’Hanlon from Laois Disabled Riders, the McDonald family and Darren Hutchinson from Laois Hire.

Thanks to all who participated, helped out on the day with matches and catering, made donations and of course sponsors; Clancys Athy for refreshments and Laois Hire overall sponsors on the day. In total €1,400 was raised; which was donated to Laois Disabled Riders and St Marys Delvin Respite Care.
