Abbeyleix Tennis Club held the Dickie McDonald Perpetual Cup on 18th July. This is the second year for the event organised by the McDonald and Bonham families and the enthuaism, interest and success of the event was on a par with 2009. The event is a one day mixed doubles event. There were entries from Athy, Rathangan , Kilminchy, Tullamore and of course Abbeyleix Tennis Club. The good weather ensured that all present enjoyed a great day on and off the court. Refreshments and prized were provided by the McDonald and Bonham families.
Thirty pairings entered the event in three sections. Finalists on the day were; C Section Billy Murphy and Marion Ryan (Athy), Clodagh McDonald and Donal Delahunty (Abbeyleix); B Section Terry Reilly and Catriona Ni Flaharty (Abbeyleix and Athy), Joy Cox and Paul Flanagan (Tullamore); A Section Tracy Burke and Cian Prendergast (Abbeyleix), Ellen Cassells and Laurence Doyle (Athy).
Ellen Casselles and Laurence Doyle who won the highest number of games on the day collected the Dickie McDonald Perpetual Cup from Abbeyleix Resident and Special Olympics Gold Medal Winner Alan O’Hanlon.
In total €1,304 was raised which will be donated to St. Marys in Delvin.
